do you have the clarkson gene?

Clarkson Student Spotlight: November '09
Kevin Lake '10
Mechanical Engineering
It would be hard to find a more outdoorsy person on campus than Kevin Lake. As the vice president and canoe chair of the Outing Club, the Wurtsboro, N.Y. native spends a lot of his time in the nature surrounding Clarkson’s campus. Lucky for us, we caught him just before he headed out on the Raquette River in his canoe. Here’s what he had to tell us.
Q: What will you miss most when you graduate?
A: Definitely my friends. I’ve had the same roommates for a few years now and I really hope to keep them around even after graduation.
Q: Tell me something people would be surprised to know about you.
A: I’ve built my own wooden sailboat already and I’m in the process of building another.
Q: What has been your favorite class so far/favorite professor?
A: I loved Introduction to Engineering Design with Professor Steven Yurgartis during my sophomore year because it was the first time I got to see what it’s really like to be an engineer. We also had some competitions with project building, which I won!
Q: Do you have any special talents?
A: I have a lot of carpentry skills and I was on my high school air rifle team. We went to Nationals during my junior year!
Q: Who is your hero?
A: My dad. He was a machinist and one of the bigger reason I wanted to be an engineer. I get all of my skills from him.
Q: What are your plans for winter break?
A: I’m going to be working at Fellenzer Engineering in Middletown, N.Y. doing consulting engineering.
Q: What do you want to be when you grow up?
A: I want to something involving boats, possibly for the Navy. Then I want to retire to some middle of nowhere place in the woods.
Q: If you could come back as any animal, which would it be? Why?
A: I’d come back as a wolf because I’ve just always thought they were cool. Plus, they live in some really awesome places like Alaska!
Q: What is your favorite spot on campus?
A: The Adirondack Lodge because I love the style of it. In fact, I would love to have a house like it!
Q: What is your favorite thing about November?
A: Since I can’t say Thanksgiving, I’ll say the fact that it’s almost winter!
