Clarkson University Professor to Represent U.S. at Sleddog World Championship

Clarkson University Distinguished Service Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering Spencer Thew and sled dog trainer Andre van der Merwe have been selected by the International Federation of Sleddog Sports (IFSS) to represent the United States at the 2017 IFSS Sleddog World Championship in Haliburton, Ontario, Jan. 24-26.

Spencer Thew and dog sled teamThew and van der Merwe will compete in the four-dog and six-dog sprint classes, respectively. There are only 24 teams worldwide in each class. At 75 years old, Thew could be one of the oldest athletes to represent the U.S. in a world competition.

Thew is proprietor of Call of the Wild Dog Sled Tours & Boarding Kennel in South Colton, N.Y., and has been racing sled dogs for more than 30 years. He has competed in numerous races, including the 1993 Iditarod sled dog race from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. Call of the Wild offers sled dog tours and excursions year round. Thew is also the founder and former owner of Atlantic Testing Laboratories and Thew Associates. He earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Clarkson in 1963 and a master's degree in civil engineering in 1972.

Call of the Wild will offer dog sled rides on Saturday, Feb. 4, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. on the Cheel Campus Center Lawn during Clarkson's Cold Out Gold Out (COGO) celebration.
