Environmental Science & Policy Major
Detecting Hidden Hazardous Materials
Few people realize the potential harm in such common materials as clay, cement and glass. I want to change that.
At Clarkson, I researched the lead content in pottery obtained through eBay. This pottery had no lead exposure warning and did not necessarily pass through screening as it would if it were sold commercially.
Research that leads to better detection methods for hazardous materials and better policies to minimize exposure is valuable in the U.S. and around the world.
My goal is to raise awareness and educate consumers to prevent lead contamination and related maladies.
Environmental Science & Policy
A Clarkson education in Environmental Science and Policy will put you in the forefront of helping to define, manage, and solve environmental issues. Global warming, depletion of the ozone layer, acid rain, and managing vital resources are front-burner concerns of government, nonprofit organizations, corporate planners, and families like yours.
Today's environmental leaders need knowledge and skills in a variety of academic fields. You begin with mastery of basic life science concepts. You must also understand complex social and political systems, the lessons of history, and the subtlety of communication. Finally, you must be knowledgeable about environmental regulation and policy. Clarkson's Environmental Science and Policy program prepares you in all of these areas to become a leader in addressing environmental challenges. We do this with a combination of 1) rigorous courses in the sciences and 2) "big-picture" courses in history, policy, economics, ethics and law.
At Clarkson, you will receive rigorous professional preparation and real-world learning experiences. Employers know our graduates have developed teamwork skills in a highly collaborative environment, just like the workplace. Because the Environmental Science and Policy program offers so many varied choices to students, you will have the opportunity to focus on your desired scientific field while maintaining a broad policy perspective.
In addition to this undergraduate program, Clarkson also offers graduate degrees in environmental science and engineering.
